Aya Itagaki

Aya Itagaki has studied and practiced classic Japanese calligraphy and sumi-e brush art since she was a child in Japan and is pleased in recent years to have reached what in Japanese art is the RI (third) level of skill called “transcending tradition.” She has illustrated seven books published in Japan and the U.S. by such companies as Kodansha, Heinle and Heinle, and Wesleyan University Press. In the 1970s she studied art history at Dartmouth College, where she discovered in the library calligraphy done by her great, great grandparents in Japan, all of which intensified her motivation to excel in art. She has taught and demonstrated her unique Aya brush art style and has exhibited in many New England Art Centers where her work is widely known and admired.
Ms Itagaki trained for seven years at the Okinawan Karate Academy in New Hampshire where she recently was awarded a first degree black belt.
